Hope Again Recovery is a non-profit organization founded by a mother/daughter team. We know firsthand the devastation the opioid epidemic has had on families, but we also know the hope of overcoming it. We hope to ensure that what happened to our family doesn't happen to others. Our approach involves prevention services and resourcing recovery options for those trapped in addiction.
Michele Zumwalt almost died from an addiction to prescription medications which she began taking for headaches while in college. Her story is told in "Ruby Shoes: Surviving Prescription Drug Addiction." After many years in recovery, Michele became a Law Enforcement Chaplain for Sacramento County and has done far too many overdose death notifications. Michele is also a public speaker for the opioid crisis, having numerous opportunities to bring a message of hope to events like the Princess Cruises, Sacramento Women’s Expo, the California State Capitol Overdose Rally, and CBS Evening News, KLOVE, NPR's Morning Edition, Good Day Sacramento and more.
Sarah Zumwalt is a second year medical student at the University of Pikeville Kentucky College of Osteopathic Medicine. She is a recent graduate in Global Disease Biology from the University of California, Davis and an EMT. Sarah is actively working with physicians to provide awareness on the opioid crisis. She serves with her mother to raise public awareness, develop and offer prevention services to empower patients, and provide recovery resourcing options for those in need. Sarah developed a three-step program for patients who are prescribed narcotic medications. She calls it the Three T's. Her "Medication Manager" tracks and promotes communication with medical professionals and accountability partners in an effort to prevent future substance use disorders.
